Have you tried the 'portrait' setting on your camera!? Do you have a 'point and shoot?' I guess?! Try that setting it has a little face on the dial. Make sure your subject is away from the background a bit. And see if you can get the same effect!

What kind of camera do you have Cathy? Mine can't make the background blury like that. I like how close you can get too.
